Odoo ERP Community Edition Review

Odoo is one of the popular open source ERP software build in python. It was TinyERP, and become OpenERP and then now Odoo, and we are going to review the community edition of Odoo in this article. You can find the comparison of Odoo edition here. In this article we are not going trough every details of every module, bu we will review it in overall package to point out important things to know to help you understand and can decide whether Odoo is suitable for you or not.

Modules

Following are the list of modules you can find on Odoo Comunity Edition :

You can use those modules by installing modules that you want to use, by clicking Install button in the module list, it will take a while an need diffrent configuration each modules. Modules available for use in this community edition is more than enough for small to medum size company that want to easly implement integrated system with less effort comparing to strugle with spreadsheets all over the place.

Installing one of above modules will also installing other related module with limited function, such as if you install purchasing module, it will also install inventory module since you must take care items you purchased in inventory, that way, you don't have to strugle to figure out which module should you install to connect with other module.

User Interface

Odoo community user interface is straight forward, its not pretty but functional, trough you will need a little time to figure it out how its work in Odoo, but the simple interface make it easier for you to quickly adapt with it.

Its also pack with simple but usable dashboard so you can see summary of whats happend. 

Advantages

1. Easy to implement

The effort from downloading, installing software, installing modules is easy and work in just a snap, you can use it direcly, or learn to configure it first. you can use sample data to learn how things goes in Odoo, and later you can create empty installation for your need. You dont even need people with IT background to install and configure Odoo to make it up and running, its just very easy and the documentation they provide is quite good.

2. Cross Platform

Since Odoo is web based application, you dont need to worry about accesing oddo from any operating system, as long it has browser, than it can run Odoo. You can install Odoo server in average computer, doesn't have to be a server, and you can use windows or linus as your server operating system.

3. Free Community Edition

Odoo Comunity edition is free for you who want to evaluate Odoo, or just use Odoo in your small company.

4. Open Source

Beside its free, Odoo is also open source, so if you have python developers, you can customize Odoo from its source code, have it your way.

Disadvantages

1. To Simple

The simple interface in some point feel much more less powerfull, for you who have previous experience using ERP system, maybe you will find its hard to get things the way you want.

2. Ugly Interface

Yes, you can find other ERP software that have better user interface than Odoo, and it feels like its something from 10 year behind compared to other software.

Conclusion

Odoo comunity edition is a simple, easy to implement software for a small to medium company that want to have ERP system that just work and cost nothing, this is a good choice to concider rather to use spreadsheet or even papper. If you have typical business process and book keeping method, than you will do just fine using Odoo community edition.
